Overshare

Rapping on his window jerked him out of his reverie. A park ranger bent over to peer in at him and asked him to roll the window down. "The lots are closed sir. Can I ask what you're doing out here?"

"Just uh, clearing my head I guess."

"You guess? Sure you're not meeting anyone?"

"No sir, just needed to be alone for a while."

"Nothing good will come of that, son."

"Excuse me?"

The ranger leaned on the empty window frame. "There's all sorts of trouble a guy can get into out alone at night and not even know it's coming."

"I was just out for a drive."

"One night I was out on patrol. Pulled into this here lot just in time to see a little Civic jump the berm, speed down the beach and plow right into the ocean. Well I called it in and ran out there as fast as I could. She didn't get far, it being high tide and all, but the car was mostly underwater already. I pulled her out pretty easy. She was soaked pretty well, but only up to her neck and the tips of her hair. She was really out of it though. Had to carry her back up the beach and wait for the ambulance to come over from Provincetown FD. I tried asking her what happened, but she was out of it. Don't even think she knew what was going on. Once I laid her down she was already unconscious. I couldn't even tell if she was breathing anymore, so I gave her mouth to mouth for a minute till the EMTs showed up. She died in the ambulance. Heroin overdose. Don't know why she needed to try and drown herself too."

"Wow, uhh... I'm sorry. Should I leave then?" Clarity wasn't going to come out here. The ranger gave him a strange, disappointed look and stepped back."

"Yep. Lot's closed."

"Alright then. Bye."
