Catching Up - Feb 2: Dear John

Mr. Darnielle,

I would like to thank you for the completely rocking concert you gave the night of February 4th at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina. My friends and I drove for fourteen hours just to watch you perform a few songs that touch something inside us. We also clamored to throw money at you for some badass shirts.

Your desire to not freeze your balls off or die after some idiot driver fishtailed in a few inches of snow was incredibly inconvenient for us, but we came anyway. Without your show we never would have driven through an entire arc of the sun. Twice we got on the road with a few other cars in the dark like we never went to bed. The sky changed in front of us, the sun beamed in through the side windows making everything beautiful. It was grueling and wonderful. Without this, we never would have walked with fake dinosaur statues, seen a hibernating black bear in the distance, or a couple captive wolves patrolling their enclosure.

A note on you and your music: again, thank you. I have never seen anyone sing about the terrible things in your songs with so much joy. Whether they ring of autobiographical truth or just stories, I always feel like you write from the perspective of someone who has risen above all those challenges.

Now the weekend is catching up to me, so I have to go. I don't think I can express anything else coherently, so thank you again.
