The swarm was gone. He knew it was never there to begin with, but he had to make sure. Stink hallucinations were new to him in the sense that the term never occurred to him until now. Psychologists on TV shows always talk about the strong link between smell and memory, but this almost felt like he was given a new, reeking memory. God that was awful.
He could still see the flies hovering over the fetid mass in the way a driver can never forget that car flipping before his eyes and the aftermath he refuses to acknowledge.
