Hypochondriac

"So tell me what happened."
"Didn't you read the police report?"
"Of course, but I want to hear it from you."
"I looked at the thing. It's all there."
"I have no problems with the report. I just want to hear you tell the story."
"You already have questions. Can we just skip right to them?"
"Okay. You said that when you saw the excavator out of the corner of your eye it was reaching across to the dump truck and sand was spilling out, and that contributed to the illusion of moving legs. How could you realize this was what was really happening while you thought you saw a man walking across some sort of platform nine feet in the air?"
"Well as soon as I realized what was going on everything clicked."
"Has this ever happened to you before?
"I've never crashed a car."
"No. I mean have you ever mistaken something you saw for something completely different."
"Yeah, sometimes you think you see a giant face out of the corner of your eye and it turns out to be a tree as soon as you pay any attention to it. It's like when you're a kid and you're trying to go to sleep but the streetlight out your window casts shadows on your room and everything looks like a monster."
"Do you ever see anything else that isn't really there?"
"You mean do I ever have hallucinations? No."
"If you've been tricked into seeing something from the corner of your eye, maybe you've been tricked into seeing other things that you didn't notice."
"Look. I'm not schizophrenic if that's what you're getting at. I was driving home late at night. It was dark. I was tired. End of story. Yes, sometimes when that happens I get worried, but I can tell the difference between what's really going on and the inferences my brain makes when it can't get all the information it needs."
"But you DO worry..."
